Lion Bookmark, by Dianna Stevens.  A modification of the Cat bookmark originally by Diana Howe.
Size 20 thread -- 2 colors
2 shuttles
2 3mm beads for eyes (Opt.)
Bookmark sleeve 2 5/8ths width
 or width to fit your bookmark.

Begin: wind  one shuttle with lion face color and one shuttle with the mane color.

Abreviations:
vsp - Very Small picot
sp - Small picot
vlp - Very Long picot
R. -  ring      
cl. - close
Ch. - chain               SR. - split ring
/ - divides Split ring

Eyes and Nose                   Figure 1.

1. R. 5 - vsp 2 - vsp 5 – sp 12, cl.

2. R. 6 —  lp 1 —  lp 4 -  vsp 4 -  vsp 4 —  lp 1 — lp 6, cl.

Snip the long picot open to form whiskers..

3. R. 12 – sp 5 -  vsp 2 -  vsp 5, cl.

4. Ch. 13.

5. R. 6 + 6, cl. Join to first very small picot on the eye ring.

6. SR. 1( — 1)5 / 5, cl. Outside shuttle (mane color) / Inside shuttle (face color)

8. R. 6 + 6, cl. Join to second very small picot on the eye ring.

15. SR. 6 / 2 + 2, cl. Join to second very small picot on nose ring.

16. Repeat steps 13 through 4 for the second half of the face and ear. End with line 4 and tie or hide ends as desired. Sew two 3mm beads in center of the eye rings for a special effect.

1. R. 10 + 10, cl. Join between the rings at the end of the nose.

2. SR. 10 / 10, cl. Repeat for desired length.

3. R. 2 ( — 1)9 — 2, cl. End as desired.

You can sew in the 2 3mm beads in the eye openings. I slid the bookmark into a sleeve to protectect it when given to young persons.  I can also date, sign and personalize the bookmark by writing on the back of the sleeve.
