Spider     Ó 2005 Dianna Stevens

Materials:
2 shuttles
Picot gauges
Size 20 thread, two colors

Begin by winding two shuttles with the spider color continuously.  You will need a very small picot gauge and a very long picot gauge.

 Spider

  1. R. 6 - 6.  Make this picot very small.
  2. Ch.  9 + 9 .  Join to the top picot of previous ring.  Shuttle-join to the base of ring.

    3.  Ch.  4 (--- 4)8, .
                   (a really long picot)

    4.  SR.  6 / 6.  Close the ring and cut the threads leaving a short length for the antennae.

Tie knots in the center of each of the long picots to form leg joints.  Place the spider on the blocking board and pin out each leg around a pin bending it at the knot.  Stiffen this with some spray starch.  The spider will still need to be somewhat pliable when attaching the web thread for the chain to join spider and web.

Web

Wind two shuttles with the web color continuously.

  Row 1.

  1. R.  5 - 5 - 3 - 3 - 3.  Close the ring and make a mock picot.  To make a mock picot leave a space of thread before starting the next split ring.  This picot should be the same length as the other picots of this ring.

    2.   SR.  8 / 4 - 4.

    3.   Ch. 8

    4.   R. 8 + 8.  Join to picot of previous ring.

    5.   Ch.  8.

    6.   R.  8 + 8.  Join to picot of previous ring.

    7.   Ch. 8.

    8.   R.  8 + 4 - 4.  Join to picot of previous ring.

Row 2.

    9.   SR.  4 - 4 / 8.

   10.  Ch.  12.

   11.  R.  8 + 8.  Join to the base of corresponding ring of previous row.

   12.  Ch.  12.

   13.  R. 8 + 8.  Join to the base of corresponding ring of previous row.

   14.  Ch.  12.

   15.  R.  8 + 4- 4.  Join to the base of the ring as before.

Row 3.

   16.  SR.  4 - 4 / 8.

   17.  Ch. 15.

   18.  R.  8 + 8.  Join to the base of corresponding ring of previous row.

    19.  Ch. 15.

    20.  R. 8 + 8.  Join to the base of corresponding ring of previous row.

    21.  Ch.  15.

   22.  R.  8 + 4 - 4.  End as desired

Wind a small amount of thread on one shuttle (auxiliary or ball thread) and thread the other end with a needle.  Place needle through the center 4 stitches between the back two legs.  Draw the thread through.  Make this thread long enough to span the distance between the spider and the web.  This thread will be your core thread.  Using the needle as if it were a shuttle, place as many ds to span the distance.  When the chain is long enough attach to the web at the base of one of the rings in the last row.  Sew the ends into the ring and secure.
